Down At The Beach Part 1

Making A Video for Beach Hut FX

While making the latest video for Beach Hut FX (BHFX) we were asked to write a blog post describing the steps we take to bring the latest Beach Hut creation to your screen. Having already made six videos, including one for a circuit bent keyboard, we have created a smooth work flow pattern.

It all begins with the script meeting, yes the whole video is scripted out. This saves a lot of time and money. This is because we then know exactly what we need for the shoot and how long it is going to take. At the meeting BHFX supply a product specification and we work through this line by line picking out the best features to highlight.

The script travels back and forth via email between us, we are Yew Tree Media (YTM) by the way. Once the script is firm we cost out the project and give the budget to Beach Hut FX for their approval, as they are paying. Once we have the green light for the project the next stage begins.

We work through the script timing the narration. This is how we know how long to make the shots. Then we work out how long the guitar parts need to be. When this vital information is ready we can move on to the next step.

We hire a guitarist and a narrator. Our first call for both of these rolls is John Scotland. We go for one person doing both jobs as we feel it is more inviting that way. The alternative is to have a separate narrator, we tried that once but it seemed to give the production a remoteness. We had the feeling that the narrator was the disembodied voice from above surveying the proceedings with a baleful eye. John is a busy session guitarist but usually we can agree a schedule that suits us both.

Green and Yellow 7 Fruit Fuzz

The Green and Yellow 7 Fruit Fuzz (GAY7FF) will push your playing into sonic heaven or merry hell, depending on your guitar style. There are two controls, drive and volume, all the better to find your favourite setting. Cranking up the drive pushes the circuit that little bit harder with each clockwise increment. There is plenty of grit on tap so, somewhere over the range of this control you may find that elusive sound. This is our second IC based pedal in the Fruit Fuzz range (the other is the Red & Yellow).  They both use the same chip but in completely different circuits. If you don’t hear it from the Red & Yellow then give the GAY7FF a listen.

We have provided a socket for the IC. This makes it very easy to replace and cuts down on your repair bill. The only time we have had the IC fail was when we connected it to a power supply with the wrong polarity. The 7, like all the other Beach Hut Fx needs a 9v power supply with negative on the tip and positive on the sleeve. Check this before you connect it. This convention is also known as the the ‘Boss’ style power supply.

As well as building the circuit around an IC we have added other modern features such as FET switching bypass and a 9V power socket to give you a choice of mains or battery power.

She is a beautiful Fruit Fuzz. The GAY7FF has four white low profile feet that are removable for your pedal board. The GAY7FF is compact so it does not take up much valuable space on your board.

3C Green and Yellow Fruit Fuzz

Stand clear guitar players!  This one is for the person standing near the drummer, no, not the drummers roadie, the bass player. The 3CGAY is based on the Big Muff with special modifications to produce sounds to make four string merchants happy. When this fruit falls from the tree it makes a big impression in the sand. Maybe this is the style of fuzz that Jack Bruce used in Cream? Certainly there is plenty of creamy gold top fuzz. It works on gigs and records very well.

The three controls are marked TFV. Tone, Fuzz and Volume. The controls have indicators to make it easy for you to note down your favourite settings.

We use FET switching so that there is no switching noise through your amp. There is a 9V power socket to give you the choice of mains or battery power. The blue LED will light your way even on that minuscule dingy basement stage.

We have carefully selected top quality components for the 3CGAY. We wire each effect by hand. It features an alpha footswitch and pots mounted in a rugged diecast aluminium case. This will give you confidence to know that the 3CGAY is ready for work.

We hand spray each 3CGAY case so that no two are exactly alike, just like bass players!

Orange and Purple Fruit Fuzz

The Orange and Purple Fruit Fuzz (OAPFF) is based on a 60’s classic British fuzz. We have updated the design by adding features the modern guitarist expects such as true bypass using FET switching and a 9V power socket to give you a choice of mains or battery power.

She looks cool. The OAPFF has full width rubber feet that are removable for your pedal board. The OAPFF is compact so that it does not take up much valuable space on your board.

The volume control is on the back, this keeps the top of the Fruit Fuzz free for the footswitch so you won’t move the volume control by accident.

We have now completed the editing of this video for the Orange and Purple and here it is :

Purple and Orange Fruit Fuzz

The Purple and Orange Fruit Fuzz (PAOFF) is an original circuit we have been developing on the workbench. Now its ready for you. On the back is a switch to select your favourite setting. The PAOFF has gain to spare and when you think its finished it comes back for more. The PAOFF just keeps on giving. Naturally we have included true bypass using FET switching and a 9V power socket to give you a choice of mains or battery power.

Green and Yellow Fruit Fuzz

The Green and Yellow Fruit Fuzz (GAYFF) is designed to give you the sound of a cranked up vintage tube amp through a 4×12 cabinet. The cones are warmed up and handling some serious power. You can feel the sound, almost taste it. We have added some modern features such as true bypass using FET switching and a 9V power socket to give you a choice of mains or battery power.

The Blue and Yellow Fruit Fuzz

The Blue and Yellow Fruit Fuzz (BAYFF) is a hot rodded  fuzz giving you that extra gain just when you need it – your driving riff. We have added some modern features such as true bypass using FET switching and a 9V power socket to save running on batteries.

Yellow and Blue Fruit Fuzz

The Yellow and Blue Fruit Fuzz(YABFF) is based on a 60’s classic fuzz. We have added some modern features such as true bypass using FET  switching and a 9V power socket to save running on batteries.

Isn’t she a beauty. We use high Alpha quality pots, metal jacks and a very reliable Alpha footswitch. The YABFF has full width rubber feet that are removable for your pedal board. The YABFF is compact so that it does not take up much valuable space on your board.
